Alghero

Alghero is the most beautiful city in Sardinia. The best option is to get lost in its little streets and to live the city life of its inhabitants. The truth is that, in a tourist aspect, there's not a lot to do, as it's a very quiet city, not very used to the tourism. We didn't know what to do, so we decided to go to the tourism office, but it was closed! And it wasn't holiday, it was a Monday!

The most interesting to do in Alghero is:

  • Walk and get lost within its streets. Alghero is not a very big city, so in a very short time you'll have crossed all the city. However, there's some tourist point, like Torre S. Giacomo, at the promenade, or Tore della Maddalena, at the end of the promenade, where there's a placard that remembers us the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldi on 1855.

  • Sunset at the promenade of Alghero.
  • Wait for the sunset in the promenade. It's interesting to buy an ice-ream in one of the shops that you'll find at the beginning of the promenade, and eat it while looking at the sunset. It's a beautiful sight, it's worthy. In order to complete the route, it's interesting to have dinner in one of the terraces in the promenade, with direct views to the sea.

  • Take the "Trenino Catalano". Although it makes a very short route, it's very beautiful because it allows you to visit all the old quarter of the city, going through its narrow and blow-out streets. If you didn't take it, maybe you would never know it. Furthermore, they give you headphones that explain you everthing to are seeing. And also in Catalan!

Besides visiting the city of Alghero, it's advisable to take the car and get to some of the most interesting tourist points, located not far away from the city:

  • Grotta di Nettuno. It's said that it's the most important and most beautiful cavern in Sardinia. You'll find it at the end of the Capo Caccia nature reserve, after decending the 656 steps of the Cabirol Stairs. They offer you a guided tour through the interior of the cavern. It's worthy to pay the 12 € of the entrance, because you'll be witness of the formation of the stalactites and stalagmites.

    Grotta di Nettuno.

  • Capo Caccia. It's a spectacular promontory at a few kilometres from Alghero, which offer some beautiful sights over the coast. Furthermore, on the road to the promontory you'll find some caves and the panoramics over the sea are incredible.

And now ...  take the car and cross the island till Costa Smeralda!
