The car, the best option of getting around in Sardinia

Without any doubt, the best investment in Sardinia is renting a car. As it is a not very tourist island, they don't have public transport systems, so if your intention is to visit and move freely throughout the island, the best option is to rent a car..

The car will allow you to take the most of the island: you'll be able to travel on your own, withouth being pressed for timetables. In Sardinia there are a few roads, so you won't have problems to find the villages and the most interesting spots. Moreover, the traffic is very low, specially in the interior of the island.

How much is to rent a car?

Renting a car in Alghero airport for five days will cost you 170 euros more or less. For that price you'll get a normal car, if you want a bigger car with more services prepare a higher budget.

In order to complete the budget, you musn't forget the fuel issue, and be careful because in Sardinia the fuel is very expensive. A litre of fuel can cost you about 1,40 euros!

Any advice brefore renting a car?

Despite being the most interesting way of transport, you must take into account some issues:

  • Book your car in advance. It's very important that you don't wait to rent a car until the last day, because although there are a lot of renting companies, almost eveybody who travels to Sardinia rent a car. We booked it a little bit late, and we almost get no car! I can't imagine our trip withouth our For Four!

  •  Be careful with the petro stations. In Sardinia there are a few petrol stations, maybe becaure there's little traffic. Don't wait until the last drop of fuel to stop in a petrol station, because you can be in troubles. Moreover, the petrol stations system is very different of what we usually find: most of the petrol stations work withouth shop assistant, and you'll find a machine that only accepts bills that, unfortunately, it doesn't work most of the time!

On our last day, when we had to return the car, we were unable to find a petrol station. We find only two, which didn't work. Finally, we had to return the car withouth fuel, so they made us pay a "fine". If we had searched for another petrol station, we would have missed the plane!

You already know how to get around. It's time to find a hotel and relax!
